Divonte Lumpkin, a graduate student aiming for a master's degree in business administration. A member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and a Member of the Texas Southern men's basketball team. Lumpkin, who was born in Chicago is in his senior year as an athlete for Texas Southern where he is still receiving a partial basketball scholarship.
During the last home game against Lamar University, Lumpkin played a total of 6 minutes, even though he didn't contribute to the scoreboard. He helped Texas Southern beat Lamar 76-73 with his sharp defensive efforts. The team currently sits at 2-5 to begin what should be a stellar season according to Lumpkin.
" This team is arguably the most athletic in the SWAC conference," Lumpkin said, "I believe if we get the little things done, we can bring a championship to Texas Southern."
Since 2014, Texas Southern has won four of five SWAC championships. Last year they lost heartbreakingly to Prairie View University 95-90. The team is good, but Lumpkin is a key role player who rotated off the bench.
Bench players might not get a lot of playing time, but their role is significant to get the starters ready for game day. They have a demanding schedule, even as scouts to make the team better.
The Tigers face-off against 8-1 Gonzaga on December 4th, at 8:00 PM.
Lumpkin might not be the star of the basketball team at Texas Southern. He qualifies for a star in the classroom though. Any other student would probably crumble at their knees if they had the busy schedule that Lumpkin has.
"I'm used to having a heavy workload," Lumpkin said. "During undergrad, I double majored in finance and sports management and still held a 4.0 GPA, while also trying to join the fraternity I'm in. I guess it is all about time management and knowing what is important to you."
" I had to find a balance, yes I still had fun," Lumpkin said. " I still partied like a regular college student, but I knew when to party, and when it was time to study"
Lumpkin, who finished his better than average college career by becoming a member of Alpha Phi Alpha is committed to serving people. " I joined this fraternity because of their know service to the community," Lumpkin said, " my mentors and role models were Alpha's and being able to join a brotherhood who boasts having members like Martin Luther King, W.E.B Dubois is a lifetime goal for me."
Lumpkin also plans on being a part of the Chicago chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha when he returns to Chicago. "I plan on helping the lower-income areas of Chicago. Community service events like feeding the homeless, getting people registered to vote and even just being a lending hand been things I want to engage in" Lumpkin said.
The city of Chicago produced a well-rounded All-Star.
During the summer of 2019, Lumpkin interned for Deloitte's professional service network in Chicago from June 2019 to August 2019. Deloitte is one of the big four accounting organizations in the world. That internship propelled Lumpkin into securing the bag. He now has an offer from Deloitte as an incoming associate after graduation.
