Debra McCaughey visited Intro to journalism 130 class on Wednesday April 10th to speak to the students on how she gained success in public relations.
Ms. McCaughey is the director of communication services in the public information office at Houston community college on the central campus. She came to speak to students at Texas Southern University about journalism as it relates to public relations, marketing, and the news media.
Debra didn't always know this is what she would end up doing. Growing up in Cortland New York, she was an athlete. Originally after college she wanted to get into Psychology, Journalism was the last thing on her mind. “I didn't want to get into journalism until my professor graded my paper and told me I should look into journalism because I was a very good writer” Debra said.
After deciding a major, she decided that she did not want to be in Cortland because the city was small. “I needed to get out of NY, it just wasn't for me” Debra said.
Debra then decided that Boston University was where she wanted to go for the next four years.
Those four years helped her land her first job at Dallas morning news, then channel 11.
I asked Debra how she got those positions. She responded with “internships, paid or unpaid is the only way to go...volunteer at as many places as you can".
Overall, Debra helped shed light on how to excel in the public relations field from high school to the professional stage.
